To live is to live dangerously. The world of Mythhaler has faced many threats, and the beckoning stars bear many more. However afraid they may be, the Nassians of Mythhaler will not allow themselves to become frozen by fear – but nor will they face the dangers of the universe unprepared. They have built a Contingency, a final hope awaiting their darkest hours. And that Contingency is you.
Contingency is an ORPGSoc society game running through the summer vacation of 2025. Players play as Minds, vast sentient structures, whose consciousnesses are copies of the minds of the Nassians (organic Nassigussa and artificial Nassoids) who inhabit Mythhaler. In the face of overwhelming crisis, Mythhaler will awaken these Minds from hundreds of years of dormancy to coordinate the response.
Live sessions, called Uptimes, will run at 19:00 (BST) every second Tuesday, starting from the 15th of July. To learn more about the schedule, see When and Where.
Getting Started
If you are new to Society Games, or roleplaying in general, the Intro to the Wiki System, Uptime and Sessions, and Downtime and Turnsheets pages may be useful. Check out the glossary for useful terminology.
Please read the Style and Tone page for an overview of the game's core themes, and the Conduct and Acceptable Themes Policy for a complete list of themes that are allowed in the context of the game.
To learn more about the setting of Contingency, see the pages in the Setting section of the sidebar. The Contingency page is a good starting point, as it explains the player characters' place within the world, and what you'll be doing during Uptimes. For more on the characters' natures, see Minds. For context on wider society and the physical locations featured in the game, see Mythhaler, The Inhabitants of Mythhaler, and Home System. Finally, see the Threats Dossier and The Coalition of Mythhaler for historical context surrounding the creation of the Contingency.
Note that the setting pages in the wiki reflect the state of the world at the time the Contingency was created, whereas the first Uptime will begin potentially hundreds of years later. Also, you do not need to remember everything from the Setting pages.
Finally the GMs and NPCs page tells you about the people running the game, and the non-player characters they'll portray.
Joining The Game
Contingency is open to any current or alumni member of the ORPGSOC. If you are not a member, you can contact the treasurer Rei to learn more and join the society.
If you are already a member, there are two steps that you need to complete in order to participate in the game. Firstly, you must let us know that you're interested in playing by entering the ballot. We will have a player cap of 24 for the game. If we receive too many applications to play, we will select players at random. We will coordinate with Happy Campers, this summer's other society game, to maximise the number of people playing at least one game. The deadline to enter the ballot is 13:00 (BST) on Tuesday the 8th of July. If you wish to ballot for Contingency, please fill in the form below:
The Contingency and Happy Campers Ballot Form.
Secondly, you will need to create a character. We will hold an optional Character Creation Session online at 19:00 (BST) on 8th July, where you can discuss ideas for your character with the GMs and other players. The deadline to submit a character is 13:00 (BST) on Friday the 11th of July.
